- Does Toccoa/Stephens County
really have
a problem with litter?
According to recent surveys by KTSCB's
Citizen Advisory Panel, litter is
accumulating on the roads and streets
of Stephens County at a rate of 31 tons
each year with only about 14
tons being removed. That amounts to 17
additional tons of litter added
to our roads each year!
- What is government doing about
litter
removal? Due to budget
cutbacks, the GA Highway Department no
longer removes litter. Stephens County
Government has only one person
spending a small amount of time on
litter removal. The City of Toccoa
Government has contracted a prison crew
that helps remove litter from
City streets and roads. Both Stephens
County and the City of Toccoa
contribute some funds to KTSCB for
operating the Adopt-A-Road
Program.
- What should I do if I
encounter an
illegal dump or other property with a
health hazard? You
should get in contact with the City or
County Marshal, depending on
where the affected property is located.
If you are not able to get in
touch with the Marshals, then call the
City Manager, the County
Administrator, or KTSCB.
- Are there codes and ordinances
concerning litter and blight in Toccoa
and Stephens County? If so, how
can I get a copy of them?
Yes, there are codes and ordinances
applicable to litter, illegal dumping,
and blighted property. To gain
information on these codes and
ordinances City residents should contact
the City Manager for assistance. Those
living in Stephens County
outside of the Toccoa city limits should
contact the County
Administrator for assistance.
- Where can I take my
recyclables?
When looking for locations to
recycle specific items, try Earth911.com.
- I'm old and need some help
cleaning up
my property. Who can I call to get
some help cleaning my property? Check
with
your
church or neighbors. If they cannot help
then contact KTSCB
and we will discuss other possible means
of assistance with you.
- Who is responsible for keeping
our
roads, streets, property, parks,
streams, and lakes clean? We
all are! Every citizen has a
responsiblility to properly dispose of
litter and garbage and to keep their
residence and neighborhood neat
and clean. Government entities have
responsibility for providing
assistance in keeping our roads, parks,
and public property clean and
attractive. Businesses are responsible
for providing attractive, safe,
and clean business environment. Civic
organizations and churches also
should do their part in setting a
positive example and helping those
who need a 'hand up.'
- Where can I find a speaker
on
environmental issues (litter, blight,
recycling, water resources, etc)
for my class or club? Contact
KTSCB
and we'll try to help you
obtain an appropriate speaker.
